Early Years Foundation Stage

In the foundation stage at Boarshaw Primary children are encourage and supported to become independent, enthusiastic learners for life. Through structured play, focused activities and small group teaching children are nurtured through their learning journey.

Nursery and Reception follow the statutory Early Years Framework in which provision enables children to develop and enhance skill in seven areas of learning.

There are three prime areas of learning:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Taking care of ourselves and others

  • Co-operation

  • Trying new things

  • Celebrating success

  • Making friends

Communication and Language

  • Talking and listening to others

  • Listening to stories

  • Asking and answering questions in response to stories and events

  • Following instructions

Physical Development

  • Dancing, rolling, running, climbing, balancing, crawling

  • Riding bikes,

  • Throwing and catching

  • Use of tools like brushes, scissors and pencils

There are four specific areas of learning:

Literacy

  • Learn words and texts in different contexts

  • Read books for enjoyment

  • Make marks as ‘writing’ for a range of purpose

Mathematics

  • Recognise and write numbers

  • Count sets of objects

  • Use mathematical language and solve problems

Understanding the World

  • Explore and investigate with all five senses

  • Being aware of home, environment, families past and present

Expressive arts and design

  • Explore different materials, tools and techniques

  • Using imagination in music, role play and art

We teach these areas through a balance of focused tasks with an adult and structured play within the different areas of the classroom and outdoors. Areas are enhanced weekly relating to our topic and also reflects children’s interests. As part of this independent learning children are encouraged to complete challenges that consolidate the adult led learning.

We encourage children to develop their characteristics of effective learning and these are delivered through the use of Super Hero themed characters.

At Boarshaw Primary we believe that ongoing assessment is at the heart of effective practice and we observe the children as they interact in their play and everyday activities in order to identify ways to strengthen and deepen their learning and development. We record these observation using an online learning journey, Tapestry, which all parents can access from a phone, tablet or computer by clicking on this link
