Bottoms, Burps and Bile: Update:

Last half term the pupils of Year 4 Starfish explored the mysteries of the human body!!! In January we looked at a range of healthy and tasty snacks. We cooked sweet potatoes, parsnips and carrots in a special olive oil and curry powder mix. After fifty minutes cooking time you can see the wonderful results.

Next came an investigation into how our teeth and saliva begin the process of digestion. We conducted a science experiment where the pupils chewed one cracker then soaked another cracker in water and placed them in a baking tray. After a couple of days we brought the crackers back in. We discovered that the chewed crackers smelt sweeter as the saliva on them had begun to break down the sugars in the food.

In February we wrote a fantasy story about the journey of a piece of food through the human body. The pupils worked co-operatively to research the different parts of the digestive system then shared their findings with the rest of the class.

Finally, we created a 3-D model of the human digsestive system. In groups the pupils decided what materials to use and drew a 2-D diagram of their model. Once that had been done they then created their wonderful 3-D models using a range of different textures to show the organs used in the digestion of food.
