Supporting Mental Health at Boarshaw Primary School

During the week beginning 5th February, we will be supporting awareness of mental health by joining in with Children’s Mental Health Week.

This year the theme is ‘My Voice Mattes’ and during the week children will be engaging in assemblies, lessons and workshops.

On Thursday 8th February, at 2.15pm, we would like to invite parents in to spend some time in your child’s class, taking part in an activity with them. If you are able to come, just turn up on the day at the main entrance.

On Friday all children will be taking part in a fundraising ‘express yourself’ day. They can come in their won clothes and will take part in a range of fun activities in the hall.

Any donations for the mental health charity Place2Be can be made via Parent Pay neared the day. You will receive a text about this.

Below is the link to the website, where you can find out information about the week and other ways of support your child’ mental health.  There is also a leaflet attached.

We thank you for supporting us in helping children to understand that mental health matters.

At Boarshaw Primary school, we understand the importance of promoting and supporting positive mental health of our pupils, their families and our staff. Click here to have a look at our policy.

Did you know….

One in ten young people experience a mental health issue at any one time. Suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 5-19.

In an average group of 30 15-year-olds:

  • Seven are likely to have been bullied

  • Six may be self-harming

  • One could have experienced the death of a parent

All of our staff are trained in mental health and can help to provide support to our pupils. In addition to this;

  • We have a group called the ‘Wellbeing Warriors’ who meet at least termly. They lead assemblies, plan in wellbeing activities, support their peers.

  • Plan in mental health weeks and days.

  • Offer Early Help to families who need support

  • Have daily drop ins for parents/carers who need support

  • Teach about mental health in lessons.

  • Offer training and support to families

Would you like some training about Mental Health?

Mrs Facchin is a qualified instructor for MHFA England and can deliver training about Mental Health.

It’s clear that young people are not getting the support they need. Key figures in a young person’s life – parents, family members, teachers, tutors, carers, youth workers – can often spot when a young person is struggling but may not know how best to help.

Learn to support young people

Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses are for everyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8-18. They will teach you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, you can speed up a young person’s recovery and stop a mental health issue from getting worse.

Our courses won't teach you to be a therapist, but we will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis - and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

But more than that, we aim to give you the information and skills to look after your own mental health so that you can set an example for young people. By giving you the tools to have these conversations, we hope to empower you to create a mentally healthy, supportive environment in your family, school, peer group or community.

MHFA England courses are designed for everyone and are suitable for a range of community settings and organisations across sectors. Training options include tailored courses for supporting colleagues in the workplace, young people, students and staff in higher education and the armed forces community, as well as the general adult population.

Let's create a future where mental health is treated as a normal part of life, in the same way as physical health. A future where every young person has access to support if they need it.

Mental Health

Every month the website Action for Happiness releases a calendar, with one key activity to help relax your mind and focus on the positives around us. We regularly share their calendars on our social media sites.

In school we have the Wellbeing Warriors who are here to help support our pupils by being their voice and letting us know in which ways we can continue to offer them support within school. Find out more about their work on their webpage

Healthy Young Minds

1 in 4 people have some sort of mental health problem at some time in their lives. You are not alone!

This can include things like feeling stressed or worried, down or depressed, angry or overwhelmed. Sometimes these feelings can be a reaction to problems in your life like bullying or arguments at home. Sometimes the feelings can be a response to memories or problems from the past. And sometimes you just don't know why you feel the way you do.

Healthy Young Minds is here to help. Their website gives you information on how to help yourself, where to go for more help and what we offer here.

Supporting Parents

The following leaflets have been provided by the Educational Psychology Service at Rochdale Council and aim to support parents with helping their children through bereavement and dealing with anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
